Robot of the day: July 15

Helping each other by turns, the two traveling companions made their way to the rocky promontory. They found the colors of the sunset notable, especially the longer wavelengths. “The view from this vantage is worth saving,” declared one to the other.

The traveling robot that has befriended me recently shared a story unlike any other. If fact I was so astounded that I made no notes and simply listened, transfixed. When they were done, robot then abruptly stood and left, tossing an excuse over their shoulder. I sat in stunned silence for a moment and then quickly sketched something based on the incandescent story still burning through my brain. Like an over-exposed photograph, detail was washed out and lacking. I vowed to speak to the robot again and compose a proper visual document of their story.

While I’ve not yet seen them “kitted out” for a journey, this is how I imagine my new explorer friend as they strike out for places far off the map…

My most recent acquaintance, the robot explorer who shared with me the astounding and mysterious tales of what can only be described as an abandoned city, has told me of other explorers that range far and wide in search of… other things. I find it interesting that the desire to explore is not common among the robots. Their stories aren’t all that well known, either…

The robot continued to describe their return from the city: “My memory was collapsing and fragmenting. The local EMF interference sent entire sectors crashing into a drifting lattice of fragments that mixed and combined with neighbors, altering perception of my surroundings. Navigation away from the site was difficult; my progress slowed to a crawl as I had to closely scrutinize and verify each waypoint multiple times.

Their journey took the robots through ever stranger landscapes. One evening, at sunset, the sky appeared to be consumed in a silent explosion. They were momentarily alarmed, however neither of them detected any rapid changes in local atmospheric conditions or an increase in EMF. Even so, there was a low-level background noise that defied analysis…

With the sighting of the giant now moved to storage, the robots set up their thermoelectric generator and discussed their plan for the next day. Through their sighting of the giant they had established the plausibility of some of the stories that had been shared with them during their travels. Their course of action was plain: they would seek evidence to confirm (or debunk) other stories of anomalous events and circumstance.

After the giant had vanished into the mists, the pair of explorers continued on their way along the ridge. While they saw no more of the colossus for the remainder of their traverse, their CPUs hummed with visual data (IR, visual spectrum, and UV) collected during the encounter. Prior to embarking on their journey many stories had been shared with them regarding anomalous phenomena in the vast unmapped areas. They wondered what else might be true?

The robots were preparing to resume their journey, one waiting on the other to complete its rearrangement of its pack contents when they simultaneously spotted the giant looming over the far hilltop. A system test confirmed that this was legitimate input— not the result of noise, corrupt data, voltage irregularity, or similar malfunction.

The robot’s appreciation of the novelty of its find was momentary— its batteries felt as if they involuntarily drained at the realization that the data was encoded in a lost language…

Robot of the Day: Inktober #20

After a moment of consideration and a calculation of the force required, the robot brought the bottle down sharply onto its knee— the bottom half of the vessel shattered, releasing the two data cards within. The robot took a moment to appreciate this: a packet of data rendered in atoms instead of bits.

Robot of the day: Inktober #19

The bottle contained what appeared to be ancient punch cards. If the bottle was an anomaly in this environment the punchcards were doubly so. A scan of the scorched and desiccated landscape yielded no other feature, artificial or natural. The robot turned its attention back to the bottle and its mysterious contents…
